"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair."

"Part of our emergency is that it’s so tempting to do this sort of thing now, to retreat to narrow arrogance, pre-formed positions, rigid filters, the ‘moral clarity’ of the immature. The alternative is dealing with massive, high-entropy amounts of info and ambiguity and conflict and flux; it’s continually discovering new areas of personal ignorance and delusion. In sum, to really try to be informed and literate today is to feel stupid nearly all the time and to need help. That’s about as clearly as I can put it…That last one’s of especial value, I think. As exquisite verbal art, yes, but also as a model for what free, informed adulthood might look like in the context of Total Noise: not just the intelligence to discern one’s own error or stupidity, but the humility to address it, absorb it, and move on and out therefrom, bravely, toward the next revealed error. This is probably the sincerest, most biased account of ‘Best’ your Decider can give: these pieces are models—not templates, but models—of ways I wish I could think and live in what seems to me this world."

If we keep continuing down our current political path(s), I cringe to think of what this country will look like in 20-30 years. With attacks on women’s rights, rampant anti-intellectualism, the rich/corporations largely dictating politics, a broken health care system, and attacks on education, libraries, etc., it sometimes just seems surreal.

"We were not born critical of existing society. There was a moment in our lives (or a month, or a year) when certain facts appeared before us, startled us, and then caused us to question beliefs that were strongly fixed in our consciousness-embedded there by years of family prejudices, orthodox schooling, imbibing of newspapers, radio, and television. This would seem to lead to a simple conclusion: that we all have an enormous responsibility to bring to the attention of others information they do not have, which has the potential of causing them to rethink long-held ideas."

Music History For You Ears

onedropcolors:

Calypso or Kaiso is the heartbeat of the Carribian especially on the island of Trinidad and Tobago It dates back to around circa 1830 From the African Slaves or French immigrants troubadours and like old negro spirituals it was sang as a way to communicate and spread messages of past and present society ills or modern day events.Eventually British Colonial rule enforced censorship and police began to scan these song for damaging content. Even with this censorship, Calypso continued to push boundaries. On his 1956 album/record- Calypso Harry Belfornte released The Banana Boat Song a traditional Jamaican folk song it was a hit. The full length  album sold more than a million copies. To date Calypso is still sung and played on the island of the Caribbean and around the world especially in Caribbean communities.
