This is one of my favorite pieces of writing, an almost-unbelievable instance of enabling limits I’ve discussed before: Christian Bök’s Eunoia, which you can see in its entirety here.

“Eunoia” is the shortest word in English containing all five vowels, and means “well mind” or “beautiful thinking”; it is also a medical term for normal mental health, and is, accordingly, infrequently used.

The work of that title is an exercise in extreme constrained writing (univocalics, specifically): Bök uses only one vowel per chapter, and each chapter must contain a specified set of scenes: an orgy, something at sea, a meal, etc.

It must be read to be believed; I think it’s very beautiful and have posted about it on occasion; Jack July, it should be said, is less of a fan of Bök’s. Above: the paragraphs from “I.” I hope you enjoy it.

Indigenous People of Eastern Africa

East African tribes range from small, isolated pastoralists (such as the Mursi tribe in the photo above) to large groups such as the Amhara tribe. All four African language families (Afro-Asiatic, Nilo-Saharan, Niger-Congo, and Khosian) are spoken among the various East African tribes. In the northern part of East Africa, the Nubi (or Nubians) speak Nobiin, a language in the Nilo-Saharan linguistic family. The Luo and Maasai (Masai) tribes also speak Nilotic languages. Many East African tribes speak Afro-Asiatic languages of Semitic or Cushitic origins, examples being Afar, Amharic, Oromo, and Somali. One of the dominant languages among the southern East African tribes is Swahili, a Niger-Congo language. Other Bantu languages spoken among the East African tribes include Chichewa, Gikuyu (or Kikuyu), and Luhya. The Khosian language family is represented by the Sandawe and Hadza tribes of Tanzania. East African tribes generally live in arid or desert areas, compared to West African tribes which often live in tropical rainforest environments. The lower value of desert lands have contributed to the survival of many East African tribe cultures as compared to ethnic groups living on more valuable and fertile lands.

Oh blimey. These are, apparently, four concentric circles of squares. But it doesn’t look like it. Unlike the last optical illusion I blogged, though, it’s difficult to say what it does look like. It’s more a kind of “OH GOD THEY’RE JUST SPIRALLING OR CROSSING OVER OF SOME SHIT GODDAMN” thing, and then you feel a bit sick from staring at it for too long.

Glad this isn’t a screamer.
